Why use horses in a long term rehab?

Horses are acutely aware creatures. They provide honest and immediate feedback. The residents of our residential treatment center must earn the horse's trust to work with the horse. Part of the experience is to learn how to gain the horse's trust through daily care; action, and communication. When an addict takes the time to develop a bond with a horse, it is highly therapeutic to a struggling mind.

Addicts tend to live life at such a frantic pace. The horse requires them to slow down and be calm. This can lead to a profound relationship between man and horse. With hard work the addict has earned the trust of the animal. The addict begins with a bit of frustration but gains a sense of accomplishment and lots of newfound patience.

Rose Thiedich directs the horse program as part of our long term rehab services. She has been training horses and teaching riders in the central Kentucky area for more than 25 years. Rose has been involved in other aspects of the horse industry, from thoroughbred breeding/sales to coaching the University of Kentucky dressage team. She lives in Lexington with her husband, Jerry.
