Why use horses in recovery?
Horses are acutely aware creatures. They provide honest and immediate feedback. The alcoholic and drug addict is always looking for immediate gratification. You must use patience when working with a horse, and when patience is acquired by the resident it has a lasting impact.
The resident must earn the horse's trust to work with the horse. Part of the experience is to learn how to gain the horse's trust, through daily care; action, and communication. When an addict takes the time to develop a bond with a horse, it is highly therapeutic to a struggling mind.
Addicts tend to live life at such a frantic pace. The horse requires them to slow down and be calm. This can lead to a profound relationship between man and horse. With hard work the addict has earned the trust of the animal. The addict begins with a bit of frustration but gains a sense of accomplishment and lots of new found patience.
